A Dialogue to Understand the Choices on Electoral Reform
On Tuesday, May 5th 2009 the Coquitlam Civic League, the Society for Community Development, and Douglas College will be hosting – ‘Understanding Your Vote: A Dialogue on Electoral Reform’. The evening’s dialogue will focus on the topic of the ‘Single Transferable Vote’ (BC-STV) and the referendum question being posed to voters at the polls on May 12th.
“The referendum on the Single Transferable Vote is an historic opportunity to alter the way we choose our elected officials in this province,” explains Ted Kuntz, chair of the Coquitlam Civic League. “This decision will impact how we implement and experience democracy for the rest of our lives and that of our children. The goal of the dialogue is to give citizens an opportunity to deepen their understanding about the merits and limitations of these two electoral systems - the current electoral system (First-Past-the-Post), and the ‘Single Transferable Vote’ (BC-STV)."
Joining us to explain the two electoral options will be Stephen Broscoe of BC-STV and Anita Hagen with noSTV, followed by a member of the Citizen’s Assembly on Electoral Reform.
Location: The forum will be held at Douglas College, David Lam Campus – in the Lecture Theatre (A1470), from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. May 5th 2009. The forum is free of charge and all community members are encouraged to attend. Please bring your own mug.
